Hello Fellow HBETA Members,
WELCOME BACK! As we wrap up this final flex week and get ready for the hectic and exciting first days of the new school year, I wanted to reach out and share some “back to school thoughts”…
If you have not yet, please check out our new website: https://www.hbeta.org My hope is that the website will be a great tool for sharing information and staying connected throughout the school year. I would encourage you to subscribe to the site so you don’t miss out on any communication. Also, please take an active role in the discussion board. I feel it will further unite our membership, regardless of your work site, grade level or subject that you teach. The more we share, the more we learn…We truly are better together!
My summer reading has included a fair amount of Jon Gordon’s work. He is an author and speaker who focuses on mindset, leadership and making a difference, and he has a wide variety of books for both adults and children. His book, One Word for Kids, is one that I will be starting my school year with. In the “One Word” books, Jon Gordon encourages readers to find their own focus word. This year my personal word is POSITIVITY. I want to keep a positive mindset, even when things get tough. I want my students and their families to do the same. I want to see less focus on the bad news and the negative in the world. (If you really need that, just turn on the news.) Please join me in looking for the good that surrounds us. Let’s share it with the community! But, let’s not stop there…I have chosen a word for HBETA, too. COMMUNICATION! Let’s all make a concerted effort to truly communicate with others. Let’s talk about successes and concerns. Let’s celebrate successes together, and let’s communicate concerns while also looking for possible solutions. If you are an overachiever, I challenge you to bring these two words together and model positive communication.
As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me, your site rep, or any member of the executive board if you need anything. We are here to support you. Your students are lucky to have you this year. Make it a great year!

PS….We are still looking for a few site reps. Ideally, I would like to have at least 2 reps per site. Dwyer and Eader could each use an additional rep. Also, I would love to have one of our counselors become a site rep to help support all of our counselors. Let me know if this might be something you are interested in. Thanks in advance.
